Ending paid subscriptions has been on my mind for a while. When I launched this Substack in January 2023, I had no idea it would gain traction so well, and for that I owe the generosity of my subscribers, but in particular, paying subscribers and founding members, who helped me regain some self-esteem and value during my period of being without paid work.
Now I am back in full-time employment as a Fellow at University of Plymouth, I am finding it tricky to commit to an article per week. I also recognise that the production of work has been slower than I had hoped, and it is often on my mind that I am not honouring the commitment to paid subscribers and founding members that I aimed for when this Substack started 20 months ago.
However, I am not planning to close Rhythm Obscura, but rather offer a higher quality of output, even though the articles may be published sporadically rather than weekly.
Going forwards, the Rhythm Obscura Substack will be 100% free and open access.
All paid subscriptions will be cancelled, and where prepaid subscriptions have been made, payment will be returned proportionally. Founding members will also have their payments returned proportionally.
As a thank you, paying subscribers will recieve physical copies of the book The Dark Nineties: Fallig out of Love with Hip Hop (slated for Spring 2025) and the next issue of HEADZ-zINe (slated for December 2024) at no cost.
Founding members will recieve physical copies of the book The Dark Nineties: Fallig out of Love with Hip Hop (slated for Spring 2025) and the next three issues of HEADZ-zINe (slated for December 2024, spring 2025, autumn 2025) at no cost.
I want to take this chance to thank you all from the depths of my heart for your support and engagement, and I hope I can continue to bring you articles of interest for free (despite their irregularity!)
If you want to discuss any of the above, please do reach out: adam@rhythmobscura.com
Thank you so much,
Adam.
